It’s not the most subtle of stories at times, but it can be when it wants to, and it is powerful when it needs to be. Regardless, if you want a tearjerker of an anime or just a heartfelt story about rekindling lost passions, this will fit your bill. Thankfully, it was never enough to make me stop watching. I will get into this more in the characters section, but let’s just say there were a few moments that had me rolling my eyes at how overly sentimental or tonally jarring they were. In the second half there are moments of character introspection that go so in-depth that they threaten to derail the main storyline, and some comedic asides disrupt the flow and emotional buildup to the anime’s climax. There are times when the anime is almost melodramatic and overwrought with emotion. In fact, it’s much more about the relationships and personal emotions of the cast than it is about music music is simply used as a means of communicating the various emotions and how they can be welded together.

Everything in this series is grounded in emotions, from Kosei’s insecurities, his growing love for Kaori, and the feelings of all other characters. If I had to describe the anime in one word, it would be emotional. What matters more is Kosei is faced with the threat of losing his muse, and at the most inopportune time. The exact nature of her illness is kept vague, but it doesn’t really matter for the purpose of the story. Kaori’s condition is hinted at enough in the first half that I wouldn’t call this a spoiler, but it is revealed she suffers from a debilitating illness, similar to Sakura in I Want to Eat Your Pancreas and Nagisa in Clannad. The second half, however, takes on a drastically different tone and direction than the first, and it’s really in this section where the nomenclature “tragic romance” fits. The first half concerns Kosei trying to understand Kaori’s technique, which is so at odds with the approach taught by his mother. This contrast between the two characters provides a simple, but effective dynamic that dominates much of the anime’s 22-episode run. He was trained to only play what was on the page with near-military precision, while Kaori takes a more flexible approach. She doesn’t hesitate to give classical pieces her own unique take, making her performances truly hers in a way Kosei never did in his childhood. In this case, Kaori fills the role of an excitable and sometimes feisty girl whose talent in the violin is as enrapturing as it is unconventional. Someone struggling with depression and questions of self-worth encounters an energetic soul who turns his/her life upside-down. On the surface, the premise is a well-worn one. In so doing, he discovers what he missed so desperately back in his childhood days: a muse, in the form of Kaori.

But when he meets the free-spirited and energetic violinist Kaori Miyazono, he is thrust back into learning how to play all over again, forced to confront his own insecurities and anxieties. Two years later, he has long stopped playing and instead transcribes music, unable to fully let go. However, at age 11, he broke down in the middle of a concert when hearing of the death of his ailing mother, and could no longer hear his own music.
In his childhood, Kosei Arima was a master of the piano, and the envy of Japanese pianists. STORY (SPOILER-FREE) While the anime is marketed as a romantic drama, it’s more a story of redemption and overcoming self-doubt for our main male lead, Kosei Arima. It’s billed as a tearjerker romance, and while it’s not entirely inaccurate to call it that, it doesn’t really come off as a romance at first glance. The entire anime is available for viewing on Netflix if you want to binge it in both English and Japanese. After the anime adaptation, the manga also received a live action film treatment in September of 2016 and even a stage play in 2017.Īs with I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, I hadn’t read the manga or seen the live action film before going into this, so I had no real clue what to expect.
The anime followed as the manga was still being written and the mangaka (comic book author) actually helped write the anime in many parts, including for the ending. Your Lie in April (or Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso)is a 2014 anime adaptation based off a romance manga by the same name written by Naoshi Arakawa.
